Aksohbin Tracy speaks to TAASC about the practice of mindfulness; here’s what he had to say.

What is mindfulness? 

We mostly go through life on automatic pilot, habitually reacting to life’s ups and downs. Mindfulness allows us to live in a more creatively responsive way to life and less out of our habitual reactions. The resulting spaciousness and ability to choose how to respond can be particularly liberating for people living with difficult life circumstances or working in demanding and busy professions who can often feel as though they are constantly in reaction-mode, driven by the needs of the immediate situation. 

 What are some mindfulness techniques?

We cultivate awareness of the body, the mind and the emotions. We use the breath as an anchor for our attention and learn how to be with our experience as it unfolds in each moment. We learn how to apply compassion and kindness to whatever is happening and therefore learn to be more at ease with our life.

What is the connection between Mindfulness and Meditation?

Meditation is one of the tools we use to develop and maintain the skills of Mindfulness. The simple meditation practices we learn and practice help us to develop the spaciousness of mind that is important for coming off autopilot. Through meditation we also learn how to develop compassion and kindness towards whatever difficulties life throws at us.

What are the benefits of mindfulness? 

The main benefit gained from the practice of Mindfulness is the ability to see and experience that we do have a choiceabout how we think and feel. Even though much of what we experience in life is often outside of our direct control, we can learn how to take responsibility for our own states of mind and how to choose to change them for the better. A growing body of international research, including clinical trials, has established the effectiveness of Mindfulness strategies in clinical situations: preventing relapse in depression, living with long-term illness, chronic pain, stress and anxiety, addiction, and so on. 

Research has also confirmed the effectiveness of Mindfulness strategies in non-clinical situations such as, the well-being of busy professionals, workplace enhancement, life skills, and so on. 

How does one incorporate mindfulness in everyday life? 

Firstly, we develop a daily meditation practice. This forms a stable and kindly base for our experience. There are many techniques and methods that we can use on a regular basis to enhance our experience, Pacing, 3 Minute Breathing Space, Mindful Movement, and so on.

For how long have you practised mindfulness-based strategies? 

I have been practicing these techniques for 20 years and teaching for 15. I have survived 2 bouts of cancer and live well with chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

What made you want to adopt such practices in your everyday life? 

Originally, I learned Mindfulness techniques to help with my recovery from depression. They then went on to support me through divorce, 2 bouts of cancer and living with a chronic pain and fatigue condition called Fibromyalgia. On an ongoing basis Mindfulness helps me to live well despite many difficult conditions and experiences.

Why would you recommend this course? 

Happiness is a skill. This is what the ancient practice of mindfulness teaches, and what modern psychological research has shown. The wonderful thing is that this skill, just like driving or dancing, can be learned, and it can stay with you for a lifetime.

This 8-week course, taught by an experienced teacher in a supportive and friendly group setting, will teach you how to boost your happiness and well-being, find new sources of resilience, joy, and calm in your life, and to cope with stress, anxiety, fear, or depression.
