Counselling psychology focuses on how people function both personally and in their relationships. Psychologists in this field work with children and adults to addresses the social, emotional, physical, school/work concerns people may have (e.g. bereavement, mental health problems, relationships) and aim to explore the underlying causes. These can be issues that people may struggle with as individuals or as a part of families, organisations and groups. The psychologist’s role would be to help people to alleviate feelings of distress, improve their sense of well‐being, and resolve crises. This branch of psychology is unique in its attention to normal developmental issues as well as problems associated with physical, mental and emotional disorders.
